Carbon Steel Tank

Carbon Steel Tank

Carbon steel tanks are used for storing large volumes of non-corrosive or mildly corrosive liquids and gases, such as crude oil, refined products, water, intermediate chemicals, nitrogen, and compressed air. In petrochemical plants, power stations, water treatment facilities, and grain/oil storage, carbon steel is the default choice due to its low material cost, mature fabrication technology, and ease of field assembly.

Design and Manufacturing Considerations

We design to API 620, API 650, GB 50341, or GB 150. For large atmospheric or low-pressure (≤6 kPa) tanks, wall thickness is governed mostly by the static head of the liquid rather than by strength. We calculate thickness plate by plate to avoid overdesign. For pressure tanks (0.1-2.5 MPa), strength calculations and opening reinforcements follow GB 150 or ASME Sec. VIII.

Common materials are Q235B and Q345R. For low-temperature service (below -20℃), grades such as 16MnDR or 09MnNiDR can be used. Weld examinations include radiography (RT) or ultrasonic testing (UT), with the examination percentage determined by the design code and the hazard level of the medium.

Attachments and Corrosion Protection

Depending on the service, we can provide:

  • Thermal insulation / cold insulation (with aluminum or color-steel jacketing)
  • Internal heating coils (steam or thermal oil)
  • Agitators (side-entry or top-entry)
  • Corrosion-resistant linings (epoxy fiberglass, rubber lining, or coatings for mildly corrosive media)
  • Nitrogen blanketing systems (to prevent oxidation or moisture pick-up)

External surfaces are typically abrasive-blasted and coated with epoxy zinc-rich primer and polyurethane topcoat. For coastal or high-humidity environments, a thicker coating system or hot-dip galvanizing can be specified.

Manufacturing Capability Reference

We have plate rolling machines, automatic submerged arc welding machines, CNC cutting machines, and heat treatment furnaces. The maximum single manufacturing weight can reach 80 tons, and larger sizes can be segmented and welded on-site after leaving the factory. We can provide ASME U stamp, PED certification, and classification society certificate.
